What is the Space Launch System

The Space Launch System, or SLS, is a heavy-lift launch vehicle that is being designe by NASA to provide the foundation for human exploration beyond Earth’s orbit. The SLS will enable humans to go farther and faster into the solar system than ever before, and open up new frontiers in science and technology.

The SLS will be the most powerful rocket ever built, with a lift capacity of over 130 metric tons. It will stand taller than any rocket currently in operation, and will have the capability to launch payloads weighing over 100 metric tons into low Earth orbit. The SLS will be power by four RS-25 engines, which are currently use on NASA’s Space Shuttle.

The SLS will be able to launch crewe missions to destinations such as Mars and other deep space destinations. Additionally, the SLS will enable science payloads to be launch into higher orbits than what is possible with current launch vehicles. The first test flight of the SLS is schedule for 2018, with a crew mission plan for 2021.
